Poetry/Verse Style
Why use Verse? The writing in Impulse is very different than any book/novel I have read because it is all in verse. There is no prose, just poetry. Each character has their own style of poetry/verse that they write in which fits their individual personality and style.
I believe that the way these words are written create more of an impact on the readers, especially due to the content. The content deals with the character's thoughts about painful issues such as thoughts of suicide, so I believe that prose would not have the same impact on the reader. By knowing exactly what is going on in each character's mind through their own individual verse style, the audience has a more meaningful connection to them and can understand where they're coming from on a more personal level. Writing ProcessWhen asked about how Ellen Hopkins writes her verse novels, she says, "It may interest you (and your teacher) to know that I don’t write drafts. Because each poem flows so specifically into the next, each must be pretty much “right” before I move on. That means I may spend those six hours creating just three pages, especially in the early part of the book, when I’m just getting to know my characters and learning their stories. I do, however, spend many hours in prewrite, creating those characters. I get to know them almost all in my head. Some writers do elaborate charts, family trees, etc. Others outline plot. I do neither. So, when I complete a book, I do one read-through for glaring errors, then send it off to my fabulous editor, who I trust to tell me if something isn’t working"

Excerpt from ImpulseWithout Warning
Sometimes you’re traveling a highway, the only road you’ve ever known, and wham! A semi comes from nowhere and rolls right over you. Sometimes you don’t wake up. But if you happen to, you know things will never be the same. Sometimes that’s not so bad. Sometimes lives intersect, no rhyme, no reason, except, perhaps, for a passing semi. |
